Where is the data saved?

GreenBooks’ data is stored inside the “Library” folder on your Mac. To access it, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Finder, click the Go menu, and select “Go to Folder…”
  2. Copy and paste the following text into the text field, then click “Go”: ~/Library/Containers/com.savingsapp.Savings/Data/Library
  3. In the Application Support folder you should see a folder called Savings. This contains GreenBooks’s database.

If you want to move or replace this folder, make sure GreenBooks is not running on the Mac where the folder is being moved. Also, make sure you turn off iCloud sync before you make changes to this folder. More, if you also have GreenBooks installed on your iPhone or other Macs, and you do decide to replace the Savings folder with a new database, it’s important that you delete the data on those devices before you turn on sync again, otherwise the data from those devices will overwrite the database you just replaced. You can remove data on the iPhone by simply delete the app. On the Mac, you can remove data by deleting the Application Support folder found by the steps above. As you can see, this is definitely something for advanced users.

Here are a few scenarios where you may want to make changes to this folder:

  • You want to start over with a new database and archive the old one. If so, just rename the Application Support folder to another name. Next time you launch GreenBooks, a new Application Support folder will be created.
  • If you want to restored a database archived in the above method, just copy the Application Support to this location and rename it to “Application Support”. Next time GreenBooks launches, it will see this folder and use its data.

Please note, if you turned off iCloud sync and replaced this folder, after you make the change, follow the “Reset iCloud Sync” section in this article to reset iCloud data and re-enable sync. If you don’t do this, iCloud will still have data from your original database.

Backups

GreenBooks makes periodic backup of your data in the background. To access the backed up data, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Finder, click the Go menu, and select “Go to Folder…”
  2. Copy and paste the following text into the text field, then click “Go”: ~/Library/Containers/com.savingsapp.Savings/Data/Documents/Backups

If you decompress a zip file in this folder, you will see files that should go into the Application Support/Savings folder of GreenBooks.

To restore a backup, please follow the same steps and warnings in the above section.
